Why Is My
VPN Slow?

VPN feels sluggish? Could be the server, the protocol, the distance, your real connection, or your ISP throttling. Let's isolate it.

🎪 Step 0 — Establish A Baseline

Before troubleshooting, measure both speeds back-to-back:

  1. Disconnect ClownVPN. Run speedtest.net. Note down: baseline download / upload / ping.
  2. Connect ClownVPN. Pick the nearest meme server (e.g. LA Bay if you're West Coast). Run speedtest again. Note: VPN download / upload / ping.
  3. Compare. Normal VPN overhead is ~5-15% on WireGuard, ~10-25% on OpenVPN.

If VPN is far worse than baseline + 15%, keep going. If VPN is roughly baseline ±15%, it's working as expected.

No. There's no paid tier and no throttling. Speed is bound only by your real connection, server load, and physical distance to the server.
Why is the speed lower than my real connection?
Every VPN adds some overhead: encryption work, longer network path, the server's own bandwidth limits. On WireGuard, expect ~5-15% reduction vs no VPN. On OpenVPN, ~10-25%.
Does the meme name of the server affect speed?
No. "Florida Man's Garage" is just a label — it maps to a real server somewhere with a real IP. Speed depends on which physical server it points to that day.
